This Yellow Weaver Bird, I painted from a photograph taken in Underberg, KZN, South Africa. Dozens of Weaver Bird nests hung over the dam water. The male Weavers were nest building and hoping to receive the approval of their female mates in the process! However, if the female weaver birds were dissatisfied with their nests they would start pulling them apart!
A Monarch Butterfly. I found this butterfly in our garden and I was pleased to be able to study it for my painting.
A Baby elephant playing with a branch.
One of my favourites! I took this photograph in The Kruger National Park. I have such fond memories of this occassion!
African elephant. I came across the original photograph of this beautiful Elephant in a magazine, and absolutely loved it! The Original photograph was taken by NightOwl Media.
Male Lion resting. I jokingly call it - Lion around!
I really enjoyed painting him. I took this picture whilst at Hluhluwe Game Reserve , KZN, South Africa.

“Nature and its colour palette inspire me.”
I am Claire de Leeuw, a self-taught Watercolour artist, from South Africa, now residing, together with my husband, in The Netherlands.
I have painted with watercolour since childhood, continuing throughout my life, thus far.
Growing up in South Africa, nature has always been an important part of my life, and as a family we enjoyed many family holidays to game reserves in Southern Africa, encountering many beautiful animals, birds, plants and scenery along the way!
My favourite subjects to paint are African animals and plants!
